Worst to First
On top of an amazing comeback during the regular season, the story of the Adult 40 & Over Men’s 3.5 team from La Cantera Racquet Club added some flair to their heroic underdog story that led the team to Sectionals.
Let’s go back to a few weeks ago, when La Cantera Racquet Club was 1-5 in regular season play. “I started thinking about next season at that point,” Paul Nuss, Captain, laughed. “There was only two weeks left and we were 1-5, so it was tough to imagine going further.”
However, it was counting without his team’s resiliency. “We won our last four matches in two weeks and tied for second place,” Paul explained. “We ended up second overall by winning the set tiebreaker, so this is how we qualified for Districts.” Along the way, La Cantera’s team beat the first and second place teams.
And from there, La Cantera put on cruise control and swept their matches at the District Championships, ending up with a 3-0 record to qualify for the Section Championships. “After we won Districts, I thought that we needed a name and after an email exchange, I came up with Worst To First,” Paul said with a big smile on his face.
Greg Spaulding, a player on La Cantera Men’s 3.5 team, quickly jumped in the conversation saying that “somebody walked up to me and said ‘WTF?,’ so I responded that it meant Worst to First but he had a knowing smile,” he recalls with a chuckle.
Beyond this clever play-on-word, La Cantera Men’s 3.5 team has shown that nothing is over until it’s over. They are now at Sectionals, trying to keep their fantastic run going and qualify for the National Championships.
