A New York Trip To Remember

Even though the US Open ended, we want to prolong it by telling the story of David Martin Jr, a 14 year old Manteca resident who, by winning the 19th Annual USTA Foundation NJTL (National Junior Tennis & Learning) Essay Contest, won a trip to Arthur Ashe Kids Day, in New York City, the day before the start of the US Open.

David Martin Jr has been a member of the San Joaquin Valley Tennis Academy/Future Stars 200 Manteca NJTL for the last two years thanks to a member of the Manteca Golf and Tennis Academy who introduced David Jr and his father, David Sr, to the NJTL community. Around three months ago, David Sr talked to his son about the NJTL Essay Contest but David Jr didn’t give it to much thought. His father reminded him so David Jr applied. “I forgot about it and on my first day of school I received an email I thought was a spam,” David Jr remembered. “I saw NJTL in there so I ended up opening it and that’s how I found out I had won the contest. It was a pretty good first day of school,” David Jr joked.

Fast forward to August 26, in New York City at the Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day, and the whole family is there to enjoy the experience. “I have an eight year old girl and two boys, 10 and 13 years old, the 13 year old being David Jr who won the contest,” explained David Sr. “We made it a three day family trip with my wife and kids so they could experience New York City.”

When asked what Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day was like, David Jr was quick to say how much fun it was. “There were a lot of tennis activities like foot drills, games, and I played with Kayla!” On top of playing tennis on Arthur Ashe Stadium, David got to see professional tennis players up close and watch the shows. “The arena was so big but I saw Sofia Carlson, Venus Williams, and Roger Federer, so it was awesome.”

What was David Sr doing in the meantime? “I wasn’t allowed on court but we got to see all the activities from the President’ suite and take pictures, so it wasn’t too bad,” David Sr laughed.

Following the fun filled day, the Martin family was able to enjoy New York and saw the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory play, visited the 9/11 Memorial, they went on boat cruise to tour the city and saw the Statue of Liberty. When asked what he thought of New York, David Jr quickly replied “there are a lot of people and lights everywhere!”

Both David Jr and Sr were thrilled to have the opportunity to go to New York and participate in the Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day. “The experience was great overall,” David Jr said. “I would definitely encourage kids to enter the contest, it was easy to submit and the whole process was simple.”

Proceeds from Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day benefit the USTA Foundation, which helps fund NJTL, a nationwide group of more than 500 nonprofit youth-development organizations that provide free or low-cost tennis, education and life-skills programming to more than 225,000 children each year. NJTL was founded 48 years ago by Ashe along with Charlie Pasarell and Sheridan Snyder.
