BNP Paribas Tri-Level Team Tournament Keeps on Thriving
On October 20-22, the Diamond Hills Sports Club and Spa in Oakley, CA, hosted 354 players who competed in the BNP Paribas Tri-Level Team Tournament for a chance to represent the NorCal Section at the BNP Paribas Tri-level Team Championships in Indian Wells, CA, in March 2018. Divided between 20 Women’s Teams and 15 Men’s Teams, the tournament was created five years ago to give more playing opportunities and spans over three days. The teams are made up of two 3.5 players, two 4.0 players, and two 4.5, playing in three lines of doubles made up by strength, one line for each level. The first two days are dedicated to round-robin play and determine the flights winners, who then compete in the semifinals and finals on the last day. Tournament Director DeDee Winfield was very happy with how the event went and how “all the players displayed great sportsmanship,” Winfield explained.
At the end of the competition, the Women’s division saw the Tri-Level “A” team captained by Amy Rennert win 3-0 against the Santa Rosa High School team captained by Dan Mathis. “We might have won 3-0, but there were plenty of moments where things could have turned,” Amy Rennert stated. “This tournament is so much fun but also really competitive and has great energy so I’m really happy that we were able to win it again.”
In the Men’s division, the Bay Club SF Tennis team led by veteran captain Greg Roberts, overcame the Napa Valley Community College captained by Sean Barnacascel, in a very close 2-1 victory. Both semifinal and final for the Bay Club SF Tennis team came down to the third set super tiebreaker of the 4.0 line. “The caliber of competition at this year’s Tri-Level was the strongest we’ve seen in the three years that we’ve been doing it,” Greg Roberts said. “Tri-Level is a well-run tournament that is a lot of fun and we are grateful to have made it through the gauntlet as any of the Final Four this year were worthy of the title.”
Captained by Michael Yurkus, the Walnut Creek Racquet Club Men’s team loves Sci-Fi and decided to take it to the next level for the BNP Paribas Tri-Level Team Tournament. Fans of Star Wars especially, Michael reflected his team’s love of Sci-Fi by creating shirts. When asked how the idea started, Michael explained that “I captain several teams and I like to have a team name, and I thought about Yoda’s quote and wanted to play with Tri-Level so that’s how ‘Do. Or Do Not. There is no Tri’ came about, and then I found some tennis graphics, so I went for it and the guys were all in.” Michael said. Check out below his team’s page profile picture! “I pretty much pushed my nerdiness on them,” Michael laughed.
Congratulations to the winners and all the teams who competed!
