Gar Glenney Cup Stays Home for Another Year
Team NorCal competed against Team SoCal on August 12-13 for a chance to keep the Gar Glenney Cup home. Taking place at the Bay Club SF Tennis in San Francisco, this competition reunites NorCal Section Champions from the 15U Advanced and 18U Advanced divisions.
After 48 individual matches and two days of competition, Team NorCal is keeping the Gar Glenney Cup home for the sixth year in a row thanks to an overall 31-17 match victory. Darren Wenger, USTA NorCal Junior Team Tennis Specialist was pleased with how tmcuh positive team energy was displayed at the event by both teams. “This year’s Gar Glenney Cup was a fantastic event and much closer than the final score indicated,” Wenger said. “Out of 48 individual matches, 18 matches went three sets with NorCal players winning 11 out of those 18 matches. With so many close matches across the board, the event could have been won by either team! The best part of the event was that we saw great sportsmanship displayed throughout the event by both sections, even with so many close matches.”
According to Executive Director Steve Leube, the momentum shifted at the end of the first day when Andre Xiao came back from 5-9 down in the super tiebreak to win six points in a row and win his singles match. “This match really seemed to turn the energy around for NorCal which transferred over to the next day,” Leube explained. “It was an inspirational match for the team, everybody was watching, they were really stocked.”
Congratulations to all the players, staff, coaches and parents present for a wonderful weekend of tennis.
