Fall JTT Section Champions Are In the Books!

The setting for the 2017 Fall JTT Section Championships 10U Orange Ball divisions was perfect: the sun was shining, everyone had a beautiful view of the city from the rooftop courts, and players were eager to compete with their team. Bay Club SF Tennis played host to 12 teams and 66 players for the first weekend of the Championships on November 11, and it was a smashing success. The one day event saw the top NorCal teams compete for a chance to be crowned Section Champion.

At the end of the event, three teams took home the title of Section Champion.

In Flight A, Tennis For Schools/Conidi Grech Tennis edged the NorCal Tennis Academy to win by 3 games. “Tennis For Schools/Conidi Grech Tennis lost to NorCal Tennis Academy by three games in Spring Sectionals but won against them head to head to clinch the title this time around,” Darren Wenger, USTA Northern California Junior Team Tennis Specialist, recalls. “Needless to say, they were pretty excited to improve on their close finish from last season,” Wenger said.

Flight B saw the Rafael Racquet Club bring the crown home to Marin County after a great tennis display. Rafael RC won their flight by 11 games over Lifetime Tennis Sunnyvale.

Flight C finished as one of the closest flights ever in the history of the event. Three out of the four teams finished within one game of each other.  Los Gatos Tennis Academy finished in first with 71 total games, but only after coming back from seven games down after their first match of the day. The Lagunitas Country Club team finished with 70 games, along with Alpine Hills who also won 70 games. Lagunitas CC ultimately finished in 2nd place via tiebreaker against Alpine Hills. “There were a lot of competitive and close matches this past weekend, but what transpired most importantly was great sportsmanship,” Wenger happily stated.

The following weekend, on November 18-19, the 10U Green, 12U Green, 12U Yellow, & 14U Coed division teams battled it out at the Fremont Tennis Center. By the time the event was over, eight new Section Champions were crowned.

In the 10U Green Ball division, NorCal Tennis Academy took home a title after a closely contested match against Vanguard Tennis. Both teams were tied on games after their first two matches in the round robin, leading to a head to head show down to determine the champion. The teams played late into the night under the lights with NorCal Tennis Academy ultimately winning the division by just four games overall.

The 12U Green Ball division had 12 teams competing in three separate flights. Vanguard Tennis was able to secure a title in Flight A by winning 130 games total. Los Gatos Swim & Racquet Club (Team A) took home the Flight B title by winning the most games out of any of the teams in the event with a total of 138. Flight C finished with two teams accumulating more than 100 games each, but the Stanford Campus Recreation Association (SCRA) ultimately emerged as champions of the flight with 133 games overall.

In the 12U Yellow ball division, there were two teams that took home titles. Bonasera Tennis was able to win a title for the East Bay after besting all the teams in Flight A and winning 126 games overall. The teams competing in Flights B and C played a round robin which also included a Sunday playoff match due to the number of teams in each flight. After Saturday’s matches concluded, Almaden Swim & Racquet Club (ASRC) and the Lifetime Aces both won their flights which put them into a head to head Final on Sunday. ASRC ultimately won with a 39-24 victory over Aces for their first section title.

The Coed 14U Divisions were a mix of the top eight teams from the fall season, some of which included intermediate and advanced level players. Flight A included the top four teams in the tournament based on player ratings. After a closely contested match vs. McLaren Park, the Morson Performance Tennis – A Team won the flight with 141 games and brought home the first title of the tournament for the Marin area. Flight B included a number of closely matched teams with three out of the four teams finishing with over 100+ games each. After the last ball was played on Sunday, Bay Club Courtside was crowned champions of Flight B with a total of 132 games.

“I want to thank both facilities that hosted the event, Bay Club SF Tennis and the Fremont Tennis Center, in addition to all of the coaches, players, and parents for making the Fall Section Championships such a fabulous event. We look forward to another year of JTT Championships in 2018,” Wenger stated after the event.

This marks the last weekend of JTT Sectionals for the year, but don’t worry, there is more JTT fun, as you can participate in the Winter local leagues. Check out this link for more information!
