Slow Start Is No Problem For These Senior Players

Dear USTA,

My name is Phyllis Seeger and I’m the Tennis Club President at the Villages Golf and Country Club in San Jose, CA.

Today we witnessed a tennis match at the Villages that would be a rare sight anywhere in the tennis world.

The Villages is an active adult community for 55+ people in the bay area, barely 11+ miles from San Jose downtown and airport.

We have over 300 members in our tennis club with many activities including USTA league matches.

Anyway, this is about these two almost 90 year old guys playing against two 85+ guys in our annual club championship doubles match.

Art and Herb (89&90) started out slow falling behind 1-4 and then got serious and moved ahead to close out the first set at 7-5.

Then, Herb got active as they noticed their opponents were tiring and took the second set at 6-0. It was a sight to watch.  Congrats to the winners Herb and Art and to the two youngsters 85+ Tom and Hal!

By the way, both Art and Herb were on our Villages Team Tennis this year.  Art was on my team, “Tightly Strung”, which went undefeated and we named Art MVP!

We hope all the tennis lovers out there can do this well into their nineties!

Enjoy the game, the challenge, socialize and have fun!

That’s what it’s all about, at least that’s what our beloved mentors tell us!

Just wanted you to know tennis is alive and well for all ages!

Attached is a picture of the winners, Art and Herb in the 80+ division!

Sincerely,

Phyllis Seeger
