Age proves to be just a number at the 31st Annual Super Senior Challenge
Every year, a few events remind us that tennis is truly a lifelong sport. The 31st Annual North/South Super Senior Challenge was a perfect example of that.
With players ranging from 65 years old to 93 years old, these seniors are still excited to compete, even after playing for decades. The tournament reunited the top seniors from Northern and Southern California in the 65, 70, 75, 80, and 85 age groups. “The North/South Super Senior Challenge leaves a tremendous legacy through top quality play,” said Bud Travers, who organized the tournament for the sixth time. “Some of these players have sectional, national and even international rankings.”
Gathered for two days in Fresno, CA, each division played four singles and two doubles each day. Despite a tremendous fight from NorCal, SoCal took the trophy home.
Beyond the result, NorCal had some great highlights. Captained by Richard Svedman, the 65 age group beat SoCal nine matches to three. And in the 85 age group led by Wayne Hippenstiel, NorCal won six games to three, with a huge help from Miguel Mejia. Miguel won both his matches and has been undefeated in this competition for several years now.
For these players however, the competition is just an excuse to get together and reconnect with old friends. “This event is highly valued by the players because it’s an opportunity for fellowship,” Travers said. “Most of the times, players from each of the two teams sit together at the banquet to renew old friendships and talk about their junior or college matches and memories, and each year the 90 year-old players are saluted.”
Congratulations to all the players who participated in the Annual North/South Super Senior Challenge!
Thank you to the Copper River Country Club for hosting the event and to Coby Roberts, the Director of Tennis.
