Double Feast at the USTA National Women’s Clay Court Championships
Congratulations to Pam Cooke of Alamo, CA, and Kim Lackey of Clayton, CA, on winning the USTA National Women’s 55s Doubles Clay Court Championships held at Houston Racquet Club in Houston, Texas. Pam and Kim also reached the finals in the Women’s 45s Doubles Division.
Pam Cooke, who plays out of Round Hill Country Club and Kim Lackey, current President and player at the Berkeley Tennis Club, were ranked No. 1 in the nation in Women’s 55s Doubles in 2015. In 2016, Pam took a break from playing national tournaments to help plan her daughter’s wedding.
Seeded No. 4 in the Women’s 55s Doubles Draw, Pam and Kim beat the No. 5 seed in the semifinals before overcoming the No. 2 seeded pair, Una Davis and Tracey Thompson of La Jolla, CA, to claim the title 6-4, 6-4.
But Pam and Kim didn’t stop there, they also advanced to the finals in the Women’s 45s Doubles Division. However, with the weather not cooperating during the finals of the Women’s 45s Doubles Draw, play had to be moved indoors. “Tornadoes and storms passed through Houston so the finals were played indoors at The Galleria Mall,” Michael Cooke, Pam’s husband and former President of the Board of Directors for USTA NorCal said. “Conditions were very fast against the 45-year-olds and Pam and Kim lost 6-1, 6-4 in that final.” In addition, Michael proudly said this about his wife’s success: “I have myself a trophy wife. She comes with a lot of trophies.”
We want to congratulate once again Pam Cooke and Kim Lackey for an outstanding tournament and we look forward to following them in their future endeavors!
